The Beginnings and the Breakthrough
Bad Religion was founded by Greg Graffin, Brett Gurewitz, Jay Bentley and Jay Ziskrout. They developed a style early on that was characterized by fast guitar riffs, multi-part vocals and deep lyrics. Their debut album How Could Hell Be Any Worse? (1982) quickly became an underground classic.
The band's breakthrough came in the early 1990s with albums such as Against the Grain (1990), Generator (1992) and especially Recipe for Hate (1993). Hits such as "21st Century (Digital Boy)" and "American Jesus" established Bad Religion as one of the leading punk rock bands.
Musical style and influence
Bad Religion's sound is characterized by fast punk beats, harmonious guitar riffs and distinctive choral singing ("Oozin' Aahs"). Their lyrics take a critical look at politics, religion and social injustices. Greg Graffin, who in addition to music also pursues an academic career as an evolutionary biologist, brings scientific and philosophical themes into the songs.
Bands like NOFX, Pennywise and The Offspring cite Bad Religion as one of their biggest inspirations, and their influence on modern punk rock is undeniable.
Current developments and tours
Even after more than four decades, Bad Religion are still active. Their current album Age of Unreason (2019) shows that they have lost none of their energy and political bite. Songs like "Chaos from Within" and "My Sanity" address current social issues and prove the band's relevance.
Bad Religion regularly goes on tour and delights their fans worldwide with rousing live shows.
